Bringing Awareness to Climate Change

This year during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Fairmont Royal York teamed up with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and The Krim Group, to spread a message in need of a world of change. With the help of some of Hollywood’s biggest names, the climate emergency took centre stage, with each star lending their voices and shining a spotlight on the cause at the pop-up photography studio inside the hotel.

Acclaimed photographer and director Justin Wu took the dramatic black and white photographs for the #WorldIsInOurHands movement, which builds upon the UN’s Act Now initiative designed to raise awareness, ambition, and action around climate change. Act Now aims to educate and encourage individual actions for climate, mainly by adjusting consumption patterns.

Antonio Banderas, Susan Sarandon and Joaquin Phoenix are among those leading the charge, sharing their photos on social media paired with a message describing how they are personally addressing one of the most critical issues of our time. The social media movement launched following the festival and garnered over 14.9 million eyes and 300,000+ likes to date. Some of Fairmont Royal York’s Executive Leadership team also stood behind the cause, including : Edwin Frizzell, Regional Vice President and Fairmont Royal York General Manager; Executive Chef jW Foster; as well as Heather McCrory, CEO of Accor North & Central America. Following the festival, the studio moved to NYC for the UNEP’s Champions of the Earth gala on Sept. 26, keeping the momentum going and earning the support of more Hollywood stars including Alec Baldwin, Adrian Grenier, and more who took the pledge to Act Now.

A proud supporter of the campaign, Fairmont Royal York believes in positive hospitality and that every action matters. As a result, the hotel recently achieved the highest possible ranking in our sustainable development program, Planet 21. We can’t wait to share more positive change with all our guests as we enter our next era!
